Smith in 1983 while a student at the University of Washington. The game was not only an award-winning bestseller, but also a significant milestone that influenced many in the video game industry. Alexey Pajitnov, creator of Tetris, said of the game, “My favorite for many, many years. Every level was a real puzzle with its own mechanics, its own dynamics, its own kind of solution. … I can’t imagine any other game with such inventive and unusual design.” In a tribute to Smith after his death in 2014, US Gamer editor-in-chief Jeremy Parish commented, “[He] created one of the most innovative formative works of the medium, a game that managed to transcend international boundaries and become a beloved classic among American PC gamers and Japanese console fanatics alike.”As a classic from video game history looks to the future, “Lode Runner Legacy” can keep evolving with your support. So pleasant to deep into my 80th childhood... Game and math logic in the same box - what could be better? I've never got so much fun as playing this game.. I don't recommend this. I'll start with the technical issues. For a voxel based game that really isn't trying to do very much, this runs like crap. My computer isn't at all state of the art, but I expect more than 20 fps at minimum settings. Which leads me to another technical issue: there are no real options to work with. You can turn off backgrounds, pick between two resolutions, and make it full screen. That's roughly it. I can't even disable V-sync. It astounds me that a somewhat official game being released to steam in 2017 doesn't have these basic settings. The whole thing smells vividly like a hacked together pc port for consoles. I haven't checked this, but the menus also can't be controlled with the mouse, and the menu prompts come up as controller inputs. You do the math. On to the graphics. This game isn't much to look at. The blocky voxel aesthetic looks a little cheap when it's done right. Meanwhile, this game doesn't know how to do it right. The blocks are huge so enemies come out looking blocky and goofy. The platforms just look as low poly as they actually are. The one saving grace here is that you can create your own character in a relatively well designed editor. This is where the voxel based graphics really tend to shine, and it's likely the gimmick that inspired this ill conceived aesthetic. You can also edit your pickups. The thing that bothers me more than anything else is that they didn't even get the classic mode right. They literally just had to rip the textures from the original game to make me happy. If they wanted to go above and beyond, then they could have crafted a modernized version of those graphics. Instead this game will continue to force feed you the same drab platforms that they've thrown at you in the other modes. It just looks lazy. They've also got this really weird first person mode where you can't see anything and have to look at a normal screen overlay just to play. I have no idea what they were thinking with that gimmick. Finally, the gameplay. I wont say much about this. You probably already know how loderunner plays if you're interested in this revival. Some of the mechanics are still very fun. I love messing up and getting trapped in my own hole. This game doesn't add any new wrinkles to the formula though. In fact, basics like bombs are nowhere to be seen. My final verdict: You'd be better off just downloading the original loderunner. It's more charming graphically, and it plays better as well. This game runs much more poorly than it should, it looks terrible, and it does the bare minimum that it can get away with. The single thing of value that came out of this is the neat little character editor, and even that isn't an original idea.. How to make a really easy to make game and completely screw it up.The developers did just that for this remake of a very old classic.Save your money don't buy this hokey remake.. Controller support is broken. Refund requested.. Someone needs to take this developer and show him how to write basic controls for a game.. Well, not bad, but Lode Runner X was better. The classic mode should had three options: current 2.5D, old flat 2d and modern 3d. I dislike the sound effects of it irght now, it is just somehow inconsistent. The Level editor does need improvements. I myself coded Lode Runner games in the past. For example: Why middle click is for deletion? And why you don't map items to 1/3/4/5/6/7.... keys. This will make it far more usable than before. Also, speed control and time multiplier feature for fast paced gameplay will greatly help.. I can only recommend this game to hard core Lode Runner fans who feel they must play every Lode Runner game. I completed all the levels on the original Apple II version (with the help of save states) but I gave up after a while with Legacy. The interface is poor, which is mostly a minor issue. However the game doesn't save which level is a set of levels you have finished so there is a lot of scrolling involved to get to the next level when you restart the game.A bigger problem is that some of the levels seem to be more of a chore to finish than an enjoyable challenge. With better level design this game would be worth playing for every Lode Runner fan.. Great dose of nostalgia. The original levels are all present, along with 50 new levels with different enemy types that add a minor learning curve to the classic gameplay. Puzzle levels are a little too timing-based for my preferences, but the adventure and classic modes are good 80's fun!
