I think like most people who stumbled upon this game, it was the aesthetic, and a bit of nostalgia for that time frame of the internet that lead me to pick it up. But once I got into it, I realized that I was exploring it and the interface like I used to back in the day, and for the same reasons. A lot of what was fun about going through old Geocities accounts (which this clearly is a reference too) was seeing the small little interpersonal dramas, seeing people update personal projects and explore this new and exciting space. And yeah, all that is here. You see people put up their own art and music and writing and as you interact with the world it slowly interacts back with you.Add on a legitimately good overarching storyline, and it's just a fun exploration through this old world. My only real complaint is that it does occasionally have a bit of old lucasarts point and click syndrome, where you have a good feeling you know what the answer to a particular puzzle is, but you just can't find out how to act upon it. It's thankfully VERY rare, and there is both a good in game hint system (just search hints!) as well as the obvious guides that you can look up (some are even nice enough to just provide hints themselves) online should it come to that. Other than that, a fantastic game.. the satire's on point, the art direction is great, the characters are grounded+heartfelt, and the gameplay really creates an air of mystery and makes you feel like you're interacting with a world that you never actually speak a word to. i do not regret spending the 20 bucks. I've wanted to reach web 1.0 experience once again for many, many years now. This title - is my long awaited satisfaction. It is not one of those empty "old windows simulation" with bunch of lonely demoscene graphics. This piece of art is actually letting you experience the Internet like it's 1999 again.I don't know how exactly you've achieved such strong level of emphaty for each Hypnospace page owner. Somehow, you've achieved vibes of any type of users: middle-age casual ones, content creators, teenagers, self-proudly indie devs, underground hacker scene, so much others.OST is stuck in my head now. Also thanks for introducing "castles in limbo.mod" to me, it was used at such appropriate moment.Never expected anyone, any gamedev to recreate this feeling, as I've always thought this 90's web 1.0 nostalgia thing is something very small niche and specific, means not widely expected or commercially successful. All people who created this masterpiece: We Salute You!You've made something really lifetime valuable for many people like me, who witnessed the early internet era.. Hypnospace Outlaw is a treasure trove of colorful characters, amazing music, and cringey, faithful nostalgia that will keep you entertained and digging deeper. If you're someone who loves to dig into the nooks and crannies of the internet, Hypnospace Outlaw is for you! You definitely want to take your time with this game. Don't rush! There's a lot to discover, and many characters to learn about. Every page is a window into the lives of a character, and there's plenty to take in about each and every one of them; from fledging romantics to conspiracy theorists, music scenes, rowdy teens, religious evangelists, and grumpy old folk. The game looks and feels as though it's alive. The story is interesting and full of twists and turns, and tells a tale of tragic overambition that will have you hooked 'til the end.---I would NOT recommend Hypnospace Outlaw for people who AREN'T a fan of puzzles or point-and-click games. However, if you've not tried either genre, this game may be a great place to start! This game is intended to be played at the player's own pace, and in many cases WILL NOT guide you forward. You will be given the basic gist of your task, and will be required to fulfill that task via your own means in order to progress through the story. This method of progression is thoughtfully supported by the exploration aspects of the game. Once again; don't rush! Important note: Hypnospace Outlaw is not recommended for people with epilepsy, or those who are prone to seizures. Since this game is meant to faithfully replicate the colorful and cringey internet of the 90's, it has its fair share of moving images, bright colors, and sudden noises.. coolpunk is dead and capitalism killed it. Y2K, you let me down.. I'm normally bored by point-and-click games, but this one is a bit different. Think more in the vein of Papers Please meets a late 90s Internet complete with rotating GIF animations, obnoxious fonts, and auto playing music. Unlike Papers Please, you will actually spend most of your time solving mysteries and figuring out backstories and relationships through web browsing. Also unlike a lot of point-and-click games, the solutions to things aren't that obtuse. They're quite satisfying. Most of the things you can discover are optional, so the game will take as long as you want it to.I really only had one issue with the game, but you can avoid it. As to not reveal spoilers, all you have to remember is when you're tasked with finding and reporting illegal music downloads, do those last.. Y2K... you let me down now... you let me down down down down down down down down down. I initally bought this game because the screenshots made me feel nostalgic for the wacky early days of the internet and having just finished it I have to say, surfing through some kind of geocities-like webspace to solve light hacking puzzles is an unexpectedly dank experience. I wish there were a few more cases to solve but the pseudo-internet they have built for this game is already super detailed and filled with custom songs, artworks and writing from a made-up alternate-history 1999, so I guess at some point they finally had to stop adding stuff which is fair enough. The gameplay to be honest isn't that strong on its own but if the screenshots look at all interesting to you, you should give it a try. A lot of the fun comes from just browsing HypnoSpace and discovering all the stories and secrets.. We take the hot butter. Mix it with the ice cream. Freeze it up cool, you can see it on your screen. Put it in your microwave, make it real hot, like a soup or a dip. We call it Heat 'n Sip!
